Posted on Danielle Gantt Fantastic jiu-jitsu school! Coach Gibson is amazing with kids—patient, skilled, and very encouraging. Juliana and the staff runs everything smoothly and is always so kind and helpful. Our kids, Ethan and Maddie, love their classes and have gained confidence and discipline. Highly recommend for families!Posted on Wendy Williams One of the best jujitsu gyms out there, in my opinion. My son was at a different gym before we found Spartan Academy. He was bored and wanted to quit jujitsu. I knew it wasn't because he didn't love jujitsu but it was a problem with the gym itself. Once we found Spartan Academy I saw a change in him. He was more confident, respectful, and he tried harder. My daughter watched her brother on the mat and couldn't take her eyes off everything going on. She not once showed any interest in jujitsu but in that one day she decided it was for her. It's getting closer and closer to a year since we've joined and this has been the best year at school and home for both my kiddos. This gym has been so helpful. My daughter has ADHD and autism and this gym has helped her with her focus and confidence. They have found friends here and a drive to keep pushing forward. Open mats on Saturdays are a favorite of my kiddos. They love going and learning from all the different belt levels. If you're looking for a gym to join or to enroll your kids in, Spartan Academy is that gym.Posted on James Scherberger If you want the best MMA and BJJ instruction in the area, go see Guybson. I’ve been a student of his for over a decade and the knowledge he brings to the mat is unmatched. Great atmosphere, tough training, and a head instructor who actually cares about your progress.Posted on Adam Bunce Spartan Academy Jiu Jitsu is hands-down one of the best BJJ gyms. From the moment you walk in, it is welcoming but serious — perfect mix of friendly and focused. The mats are always clean, the facility is spacious, and they actually have decent air conditioning (a rarity in some gyms!). Professor Guybson and the other coaches are incredibly knowledgeable, patient with beginners, and still push the advanced guys hard. They break down techniques clearly and always emphasize the details that actually make them work. Rolling is competitive but respectful. They have morning, noon, and evening classes pretty much every day, plus open mats on weekends, which makes it easy to fit training into a busy schedule. The community here is legitimately great. The kids programs are solid too if you have little ones. The coaches make it fun but still teach great technique and core values (respect, discipline, never quit). If you live in the area and you’re even mildly curious about jiu jitsu (beginner or experienced), do yourself a favor and drop in. 100% recommend Spartan Academy. SAS!Posted on Mark Fuge Has been such a life enhancing benefit for me. Learning Jiu Jitsu in such a supportive environment has made me a better humanPosted on Travis Maynard Went to open mat this morning and everyone was very hospitable. Professor Guybson was great and everyone I rolled with was a lot of fun. Great group and I’ll definitely go back.Posted on Jazz To begin, Spartan Academy has consistently high ranking tutelage that is world-class to say the least. From the etiquette and expectations put on students, you feel as though you are part of something bigger than yourself. However, to speak only of the quality of jujitsu would be a disservice to this facility. Spartan Academy is a place that enhances one’s life skills and can truly turn your life into something you couldn’t imagine. The quality of people here will add exponential value to your quality of life. I was able to become a self-sufficient small business owner and homeowner due largely to the connections and support in the time spent here. I can’t appreciate the owners or my teammates here enough. Lives change here for the better.Posted on Rose Derrick When you think you just sent your kid to learn BJJ? Boy! I was wrong. We now got new friends like families and much more from this gym! I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate what they have done to my kid’s life. I highly recommend them!Posted on Brooke Gentry Best gym in the state. Great people who continue to learn and grow together. Endless opportunities to learn from skillful teachers who treat you like family! Would recommend this gym to anyone and everyone
Find answers to frequently asked questions about Spartan Academy’s Kids BJJ Competition Class and understand how this program prepares young athletes (ages 7-15) for success in tournaments.
The primary goal is to prepare young BJJ practitioners specifically for the challenges of competition. This involves refining techniques for tournament scenarios, developing strategic thinking, enhancing physical conditioning, and building the mental toughness required to perform under pressure.
This class is designed for boys and girls aged 7 to 15 who already have some foundational experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's intended for students who are interested in testing their skills in a competitive environment and are ready for more focused, strategy-oriented training.
While regular classes build a broad foundation, the competition class focuses specifically on techniques, strategies, and conditioning relevant to BJJ tournaments. This includes more advanced positional control, specific submission setups, escape sequences common in competition, and a greater emphasis on live sparring rounds (rolling) that simulate match intensity.
Participation in tournaments is strongly encouraged as it provides valuable experience, but it is not strictly mandatory. The class focuses on preparing students *for* competition, and the skills learned (discipline, strategy, resilience) are beneficial regardless of whether they compete immediately or frequently.
Led by experienced competitors like Professor Guybson Sa, the class incorporates drills and sparring rounds that simulate competition pressure. Students learn strategies for staying calm, focusing during matches, and handling both wins and losses constructively. This builds confidence and develops a resilient competition mindset over time.
