hamilton brown2025-05-09 I've been going here about a month and am really enjoying the kickboxing fundamentals classes. Aidan is a great coach, highly recommend giving it a try if kickboxing or Muay Thai have ever peaked your interest. Tim O'Neal2025-04-08 I've been a member at Spartan for about a year. Started in the fundamentals class with Nate and quickly realized this was a safe environment with discipline, technique, and extremely high level instruction. After getting a solid base of how to defend myself and not hurt others, I moved to attending the adult class (when I can). There, it is an honor to learn from Professor Guybson. The only thing you are judged on is your effort. This is a gym with multiple black belts with just as many folks who want to join for the fitness, strength, and self-defense aspects. I cannot imagine a week of not getting on the mats at Spartan. This is a phenomenal facility with smart, intentional instruction. Deborah Briggs2025-04-06 This is the perfect place to learn BJJ in a very welcoming environment that welcomes students of all ages. Every coach has been able to provide my child with a positive experience. This is definitely not a “BJJ in a Box” gym. If you are looking for a place where you can “buy a belt” this is not the place for you. You don’t buy belts here - you earn them through hard work, developing skills, practice. The Sa lineage is impressive. Juliana and Guybson treat every student with respect and support every student on their BJJ journey. Every instructor here goes above and beyond. My child started with MMA and switched to BJJ after a few months. The skill development in both programs is phenomenal. He has learned so much and he loves to be there. He would attend 6 days a week if I would let him. If you have a child that has a competitive streak, SAS Team is a very solid team with an international presence. My child does compete and I can honestly say that he has never entered a competition without being prepared. And, unlike other gyms in the area, sandbagging is not encouraged or allowed. No one is forced or required to compete, but the support is there if that is the path you choose. Competing at the local, domestic, and international level are within reach for members of SAS Team. Additionally, if you or your child want to try MMA, DO IT. Aidan is a fabulous instructor and trainer. He genuinely loves his art and shares his knowledge freely. jake olson2025-04-04 Best gym in the area. Great coaches, great group of people on the mats, very welcoming, and lots of great training. Keyser Soze2025-04-03 Excellent team and atmosphere! My daughter has been training at Spartan for a few years now starting with BJJ and recently added MMA. She loves the training and the people, keeps getting better and better! ryan Findlay2025-04-03 I have been training at spartan for 2 years and it’s been the best experience I could have had. paul gottshall2025-04-03 I’ve been training here for over a year, the atmosphere is great. If you want to be the best in BJJ in all of South Carolina this is your gym. I’ve seen some world champions in the making here Ethan B2025-04-03 This place is incredible! They are a 5:45 class, a 11am class and a class at 6:30. That leaves no excuses for anybody. Guybson is a really great teacher! Wendy Kuhn2025-03-29 Fantastic place to train! Great people, great environment, and great instructors. Highly recommend!
FAQs
Questions About Kids BJJ Competition Class
Find answers to frequently asked questions about Spartan Academy’s Kids BJJ Competition Class and understand how this program prepares young athletes (ages 7-15) for success in tournaments.
The primary goal is to prepare young BJJ practitioners specifically for the challenges of competition. This involves refining techniques for tournament scenarios, developing strategic thinking, enhancing physical conditioning, and building the mental toughness required to perform under pressure.
This class is designed for boys and girls aged 7 to 15 who already have some foundational experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's intended for students who are interested in testing their skills in a competitive environment and are ready for more focused, strategy-oriented training.
While regular classes build a broad foundation, the competition class focuses specifically on techniques, strategies, and conditioning relevant to BJJ tournaments. This includes more advanced positional control, specific submission setups, escape sequences common in competition, and a greater emphasis on live sparring rounds (rolling) that simulate match intensity.
Participation in tournaments is strongly encouraged as it provides valuable experience, but it is not strictly mandatory. The class focuses on preparing students *for* competition, and the skills learned (discipline, strategy, resilience) are beneficial regardless of whether they compete immediately or frequently.
Led by experienced competitors like Professor Guybson Sa, the class incorporates drills and sparring rounds that simulate competition pressure. Students learn strategies for staying calm, focusing during matches, and handling both wins and losses constructively. This builds confidence and develops a resilient competition mindset over time.
