Posted on Google Ryder Clemmo This is hands down the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym I have ever trained at. I have wrestled my entire life and I am currently a brown belt in BJJ, so I have been around a lot of rooms, coaches, and different styles of training. This gym is on another level. Professor Gibson is a black belt and the best coach I have ever had. He holds your feet to the fire, pushes you past your comfort zone, and makes sure you are getting better every single day. He does not let you cut corners, and that is exactly what makes his coaching so valuable. The gym itself is modern, clean, well-designed, and very well kept. You can tell there is pride in the facility, the training, and the culture. The people here are great too. Everyone pushes each other, encourages each other, and helps bring the best out of you. I have trained and been around BJJ gyms in Columbia and the Midlands, and in my opinion, none of them even come close to this gym. The coaching, the atmosphere, the facility, and the people are unmatched. Whether you are brand new, a wrestler looking to transition into Jiu-Jitsu, or an experienced grappler, this is the place to train. The best gym I have ever been a part of.Posted on Google Matthew Wilson Outstanding coaches, and a true feeling of family and community. You will sweat. It will be hard. You will learn an amazing martial art along the way and it will be 100% worth it.Posted on Google Sabrina Ferguson We are part of the Spartan Academy Family for a year now and we love everyone there and the Lessons. We drive 30mins one way because there is nowhere better to bring your Kids to learn BJJ. Big FansPosted on Google Daniel Tavares BJJ Academy My name is Francisco Daniel Pires Tavares. I’ve been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 25 years, starting in Fortaleza, Brazil, under Professor Sazinho, son of Grandmaster Sá. It’s an honor to recommend Spartan Academy. This is authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with a strong family environment and world-class instruction in BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA, and an excellent kids program. If you’re looking for a place that can truly change your life, this is it. I highly recommend it. If I could give 10 stars, I would.Posted on Google Tony Fogle This place changed my life. I can't exaggerate how much Jiu Jitsu improves you as a person, and this is the place to experience that. Professor Guybson Sa is a 3 time world champion from Brazil. He is the real deal. His father is one of the rare people on earth who earned their red belt in BJJ so he was born and raised in this world. There is no one more qualified to teach BJJ in Columbia, SC.Posted on Google Jackie and Jay Page Our family absolutely loves Spartan Academy! My three boys and my husband all train in Jiu Jitsu there, and it has been such a positive influence in their lives. Beyond learning techniques and gaining confidence, they are learning respect, discipline, the value of hard work, and how to persist even when things are difficult. It truly feels like a supportive family environment. The confidence my boys have gained through training has been amazing to watch, both on and off the mats. Professor Sa and the entire staff at Spartan Academy are fantastic. They truly care about their students and create an encouraging atmosphere where everyone feels supported and challenged to grow. We are so grateful to be part of this community and highly recommend Spartan Academy to anyone considering Jiu Jitsu training!Posted on Google Fernanda Cojulun My 7-year-old daughter has been training there for a while, and I can assure you that it is the best place for Jiu-Jitsu training in Columbia!! It’s not just Jiu-Jitsu. You can see examples of lessons in respect, punctuality, responsibility, camaraderie, and loyalty. We love it!Posted on Google Christian Blackford Amazing gym. You won't find anywhere better.Posted on Google Travis Fisher Solid place to train, learn and grow. Welcoming atmosphere with passionate instruction. I highly recommend trying out some classes as well as allowing your kids to come and participate. Nothing better to mold our children than spending time on the mats and find comfort in that. Keep it up guys!!Posted on Google Andrea Stevenson My daughter is brand new to jujitsu and she was excited and nervous. She has been training at Spartan Academy for a little over a month, twice a week and she loves it and she’s learning so much in a short amount of time. Guybson and Chris really know what they’re doing when it comes to teaching these kids the techniques and keeping them engaged in the class. If there is any time my daughter doesn’t understand something immediately, they are quick to spot it and help her one on one and be sure she gets it before the end of class. I would 10/10 recommend training with SA for your kids.
Find answers to frequently asked questions about Spartan Academy’s Kids BJJ Competition Class and understand how this program prepares young athletes (ages 7-15) for success in tournaments.
The primary goal is to prepare young BJJ practitioners specifically for the challenges of competition. This involves refining techniques for tournament scenarios, developing strategic thinking, enhancing physical conditioning, and building the mental toughness required to perform under pressure.
This class is designed for boys and girls aged 7 to 15 who already have some foundational experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's intended for students who are interested in testing their skills in a competitive environment and are ready for more focused, strategy-oriented training.
While regular classes build a broad foundation, the competition class focuses specifically on techniques, strategies, and conditioning relevant to BJJ tournaments. This includes more advanced positional control, specific submission setups, escape sequences common in competition, and a greater emphasis on live sparring rounds (rolling) that simulate match intensity.
Participation in tournaments is strongly encouraged as it provides valuable experience, but it is not strictly mandatory. The class focuses on preparing students *for* competition, and the skills learned (discipline, strategy, resilience) are beneficial regardless of whether they compete immediately or frequently.
Led by experienced competitors like Professor Guybson Sa, the class incorporates drills and sparring rounds that simulate competition pressure. Students learn strategies for staying calm, focusing during matches, and handling both wins and losses constructively. This builds confidence and develops a resilient competition mindset over time.
